An adventure with Pink Flamingo part 2
-"If my friends could see me now…" the melody crossed through my head and I giggled to myself. I was right about the seat. It was not comfortable at all, but soon I forgot about that. The cargo Tom and Francisco were picking up was camera- and movie-equipment from a commercial or a fashion advertisement that had taken place on the island.

All the way over the Atlantic to the Bahamas, the flight went smoothly. The sight was clear, but I could not see very much of the view below from where I were sitting. I had to stretch over Tom’s shoulder to be able to look down, but I have seen the coral refs in the ocean from other "real" planes. The "touchdown" in Freeport went just as well as the flight and for the first time in my life I was on Bahamian ground.

-This stop can’t be a long one, was my thought. To load a few cameras etc. will only take a few minutes or so. That wasn't true! Later the whole plane was filled with equipment and there was another plane there to pick up some too….

This was a lot of work, and it took its time since all had to be handled with much care. I had no idea that so much equipment was needed to put f a few minutes of a commercial on film. While the airport-personnel under supervision of Francisco, loaded the plane, I followed Captain Tom to an office at the terminal. He had to fill in a lot of papers for the Customs. This is the lousy part in this job, he told me.

Regularly the cargo is already onboard when leaving Miami, Tom had told me. Cargo, such as food, newspapers and medication, left daily for the islands. All the cargo I provided with was my purse. Since Bahamas is "going abroad" my purse carried my passport and visa for United I had also brought my camera and extra film, and had already taken a few pictures of the "Pink Flamingo" and its interior while the plane was still empty.

While I waited for the plane to be filled, I walked around in the area where the plane was parked. I could see a huge jet liner on its way in for landing.
It came in my direction. I grabbed my camera and started to take a sequence of pictures of the machine's arrival to the terminal. It was luckily for me that the jet had to do a sharp turn, which let me get pictures of it from different angles. They turned out fine and became a nice souvenir from my trip.

When all was done we went back to the plane which I hoped was filled with cargo and ready to take off. It wasn't! Now the camera had to keep me company while the pilots went on with their duties. All pilots does not fly around the world with passengers and nice-looking stewardesses, a working area that seems more glamorous. I had asked Tom why he preferred to fly cargo, and he had told me that this is less trouble. Hmmm,
I wondered what he meant by that. Any way, to be an Airplane-pilot is like any other jobs; it has to be done.

At last! It was time to go back home. Not that I wasn’t enjoying my self, but I had started to worry about the guests I had invited for dinner that particular night.

The trip back over the Atlantic was a bit rough. The wind had picket up, and the landing at Miami International Airport was quite unsteady and a bit scary to me. I could see how both pilots hold a steady grip on the steering wheels and felt how "Pink Flamingo" was shaking and leaning back and forth. The bird was actually flapping with its wings. Tom grinned when I pointed this out after the landing. Naturally it was nothing to him, but he agreed to that he, for a while, had to work to keep the plane in balance. After going through Customs and Immigration, we took off for the airfield we had started from. Well, I was quite a bit late, but I was home in time to greet my friends and give my somewhat unusual excuse why the dinner was not ready on time. Dear Pink Flamingo, please forgive me for insulting you a couple of times. I actually liked you
a whole lot.

EPILOG

The trip was in 1998.

Last time I heard about "Pink Flamingo", I learned that she is fine and still going strong, but she is not pink anymore. And Captain Tom has turned into a "regular big jet-liner pilot" (Congratulations is in place:
-All the best to you Captain Thomas!. By the way, my trip with Pink Flamingo is still "tickling me pink". It is a very fond memory. I also like to mention that my first trip with a DC-3 I, my mother and 3 of my siblings were on our way from Sweden to Cairo, Egypt in 1953.
