School-Assignments 1

As I  told you earlier, I have a past as an adult student at Niagara College in Welland, Ontario, Canada. For two years I took classes to be-come a graphic designer. Well, suddenly I found myself in the United States and Florida, to where my husband was transferred, and where I couldn't or still can't work due to not being in the possession of a visa, which would allow me to work here.

The other day I went thru some old items in a big black portfolio I used to carry around almost every day. In there found some work from assignments I did in school during my 4 semesters 1991-1993.

These items are perhaps not very good since done by a beginner, but the pieces will show you what we did in this kind of classes  before the help of  computes. We had wonderful old equipment for typesetting and the cameras were huge and exiting to work with.  Then again, some in the graphic business are still done by hand. Peoples talents and workmanship is hard to exchange for robots. They still must be programmed by the same talented people. However today, how sweet it is to not have to draw lines in ink with a pen and ruler or mess with glue to put the types in place.
Trust me on this one!

Muscovy-Story is a picture-story about two ducks. And Pink Flamingo is about a flight with an old DC-3

It is with fondness I remember my teachers in English. I learned more than I knew I did. However, my English is far from perfect.

DontLetSun

Above is a sketch in ink on the song Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me. It expresses the difficulty I felt in being a student, so much older than my class-mates and not being able to share their interests and the future youth has ahead.
- I too had a dream... I worked hard, and I tried to become a friend... "Susan", I hope it worked out for you.

The strange thing is, that my intuition and fore sight about having graphics done on the computer was not well received. This was even held against me for the rest of the last school year. "There is no way to make a strait line on the computer....", he said angrily (1992).

Well, I guess I have the last laugh there, but I do think I left a second thought about the matter, and I bet none of my teachers are this ignorant any more :-).

I wonder what they do now. The Graphic Design course isn't on the curriculum any more.

Well, if they notice my pages they will know they aren't forgotten :)

My art-essay? I think I still got it. How valuable and a joy those art-history lessons still are. And then naturally the English classes. Forgive me for all mistakes today, but my Canadian  English has probably been quite  mixed up with the American English. What did you use to note... wordy. Still am! Business English was easy. I knew it from before.

Some examples from the first year
Since this is about the introduction to Graphic Design's fundamentals, you will notice that a lot of work is done in pen and ink in the first semester. I will spare you my color-wheel, hand-lettering and also my life-drawings.

ChCardSilkScre

The obligatory Christmas-card was supposed to be silk- screened, but time ran to quickly that first very fun and busy first semester 1991. To cut in ruby-lithe takes a lot of practice and a steady hand. Is this a lost art and craft? I must admit I enjoyed doing this, but it was rather difficult.
